Our Farming Philosophy
Here is the truth of the matter: we are not certified organic. We utilize basic organic principles as outlined by the National Organic Program and then take it a few steps more. We strive to be, as Joel Salatin farmer and owner of Polyface Farms calls it, beyond organic. As organic products became increasingly popular, large industrial agriculture has entered the mix, looking for their share of organic profits. Today, many organic products in the supermarket are sourced from other countries or large industrial farms who continue to push out small, family owned and operated farms. What's the point of buying organic when its shipped half- way across the world? By supporting small, local farms, communities are keeping money in the local economy, helping to create jobs with people who receive a fair wage, reducing carbon footprints by reducing use of petroleum, and buying the freshest, most nutritious produce for their dollar.
That being said, this is what we commit to our local community and our supporters:
NO SYNTHETIC FERTILIZERS, PESTICIDES OR HERBICIDES, EVER. We farm using only organic fertilizers, crop rotation, and cover cropping methods in order to improve the soil and increase production.
WE ARE FIRST AND FOREMOST SOIL FARMERS. If the soil lacks nutrients, so does your food. We work to improve soil health by cover cropping, adding compost, and using minimum tillage techniques.
WE BELIEVE THAT DIVERSITY IS PART OF A HEALTHY ECOSYSTEM. We grow a variety of heirloom vegetables, herbs, and flowers. We allow our plants to go to seed to attract pollinators. We treasure the birds, bats, bees, and beneficial insects that reside with us on the farm.
WE VALUE SUSTAINABILITY. We are constantly analyzing how our farming may impact the environment around us and take the time to learn minimally invasive techniques. We use solar power to generate the energy needed to pump our water from the ground and minimize water use with mulches and drip irrigation. We believe that growing seasonally is important to give the land and ourselves a break and follow the rhythms of nature.
WE VALUE HIGHLY NUTRITIOUS FOOD. We believe that produce should be delivered to your door within a day of harvest so you and your family can benefit from the freshest, most nutritious food for your dollar. We grow produce varieties that are known for their high nutrition content, not their perfect appearance.
WE BELIEVE IN SUPPORTING LOCAL SMALL BUSINESSES. Buying local instills confidence in the quality and means of production of your food, provides a camaraderie with your farmer, bridges the gap between food and its source, helps boost the local economy and small business, and combats climate change. Sign up for our CSA and you can be part of the movement!!
